Winter Writing Wonderland Fun (PBS Parents)

From PBS Parents:
The winter solstice is right around the corner, marking both the shortest day of the year for those of us in the northern hemisphere and the official beginning of winter. But with 70 degree temperatures here in Baltimore, it’s more popsicle eating weather than snowman making weather.
Which is why I’m seriously digging this wintry Adventure in Learning that gets kids writing in the “snow” regardless of the temperature outside.

Multi-Sensory Learning

This Montessori activity is rooted in the theory of multi-sensory learning. The general idea behind multi-sensory learning is that we make the strongest connections when we engage more than one of our senses while processing information and archiving it in our memory. In this activity, kids engage both their sense of touch (dragging their fingers through the salt) and sight (revealing color) to practice writing their letters.

What You’ll Need

  • Salt
  • A baking or pie pan with deep sides
  • Construction paper

Let It Snow!

Line a baking or pie pan with a sheet of construction paper.
winter writing sensory activityPin It
Fill the container with a thin layer of salt. Make sure it’s enough to cover the paper.

Have your child practice writing letters in the salt. As they drag their fingers through the salt, they’ll reveal a letter.
Note: It’s best to have visual references nearby for emerging writers (eg., letters written on squares of paper or letter-shaped puzzle pieces). It’s easier for kids to write from a model than recall what letters look like from memory. Plus, it turns this into a more independent activity.

Give the pan a little shake or a light brush and kids have a blank slate to write again. Double the fun by adding small figures, arctic animals, or trees to create a truly wintry scene.
Enjoy the snow!

Children's Museum Features Free Screening of The Land: Film and Talk

THE LAND
A Film and Conversation About Risk and Adventure Play
Thursday, October 22 | 6:30 - 8:00 PM

Rhode Island PBS and the RI PBS Kids Club are pleased to share the following information:

Providence Children’s Museum and Providence Children’s Film Festival present the Providence premiere of “The Land” – a 2015 documentary short film about the nature of play and risk – on Thursday, October 22 from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at Providence Children’s Museum (100 South Street in Providence).

The film is set in The Land, a Welsh adventure playground where children climb trees, light fires and use hammers and nails.  It’s a playspace rooted in the belief that kids are empowered and understand their own capabilities and limits when they learn to manage risks on their own.  The film has attracted national attention after being featured in a number of recent articles including “The Overprotected Kid,” a provocative piece in The Atlantic by Hanna Rosin.

A lively conversation about the film, adventure play and the benefits of risk to kids’ physical and emotional development will follow the screening.  Discuss ways to foster healthy risk-taking in kids’ play, and how to provide kids with opportunities for adventure play with panelists Erin Davis, “The Land” filmmaker; Michele Meek, filmmaker and educator; and Janice O’Donnell, Providence PlayCorps director.

The screening and conversation are part of Providence Children’s Museum’s commitment to advocate for and raise awareness about the critical importance of self-directed play for children’s healthy growth and development.

The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited.  Please RSVP at www.ChildrenMuseum.org/TheLand.asp.

The Vids are in! 2015 Rhode Island PBS Kids Writers Contest Winners

Fun! Imagination! And such talent!  It's the Writers Contest for children in Kindergarten - 3rd Grade.

There's nothing quite like reading a great story to travel to places up the street, around the globe, and even across the galaxy -- without ever leaving your chair. Reading ignites the imagination and sparks creative thinking. The PBS Kids Writers Contest is one way to capture those creative ideas that come from reading and imagining, shape the ideas into stories, and then share the stories with others.

With the news today from PBS Kids announcing the national winners of the 2015 Writers Contest, we thought it would be the perfect time to share the videos of stories by our local winners.

We invited our first place award recipients in each grade to come to the Rhode Island PBS studios to read the winning story.

You can read and share all of the first, second, third place winners here. Congratulations and thank you to all of our writers!

Look for an announcement about next year's local contest, coming early in 2016. The contest will run from January through March.

Cha-Ching! Financial Literacy for Children on Rhode Island PBS

Cha-Ching! Financial Literacy for Children

Rhode Island PBS is pleased to present this series of short videos that teach money concepts so children understand them. Cha-Ching is a financial literacy program that provides a platform for 7 to 12 years old children to learn (with the help of their parents) the knowledge, tools and practice they need to make informed financial decisions to reach their own personal goals and dreams.

Cha-Ching! Financial Literacy for Children
Cha-Ching! Financial Literacy for Children

The project - begun in Asia - was produced in response to key findings from a major research initiative, which shows that only 13% of parents believe their children possess money management skills - though almost all parents (96%) think it is important to learn them.

Based on comprehensive teachings from children’s education expert, Dr. Alice Wilder, the story lines have been written around the four key and comprehensive concepts of money: Earn, Save, Spend and Donate.

Children mostly only see the spend side of money, but children also need to understand that Earn, Save, Spend, Donate is a cycle of money, and choices that have to be made every day, throughout life.

Parents, guardians, grandparents! Join the Rhode Island PBS Kids Club, in partnership with Farm Fresh Rhode Island, Johnson and Wales University, Rhode Island Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Southside Community Land Trust, and Tatutina, as we bring children together for Rhode Stand - healthy food will make you grow!

On Saturday, May 2, children ages 4-7 and 8-11 are invited to come to the Rhode Island PBS studios to experience hands on demonstrations. Using their five senses, children will touch, smell, see, hear, and taste their way through a variety of age appropriate activities all centered around how produce grows. Afterwards, children can choose to record their experiences through one final project: a special art project, or a video diary, or creating their own menu. Here are activities planned by our partners:

ALL CHILDREN

Farm Fresh Rhode Island
Vegetables are Plant Parts We Eat!
Children will have the opportunity to learn about vegetables as different parts of a growing plant through interactive and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Preschool-Grade 1
Farm Fresh RI staffers will read Tops & Bottoms aloud to children as they explore the different ways vegetables grow. Then children will have the opportunity to “harvest” fruits and vegetables in our interactive garden space or create a plant parts coloring activity.
  • Grades 2-5
Children will participate in a plant parts trivia game. Following trivia, children will have the opportunity to “harvest” fruits and vegetables in our interactive garden space or create a plant parts coloring.
Southside Community Land Trust
Snap peas will be the focus, easy to plant, quick growing, and kids love them! Children will be able to taste raw snap peas, and try pea tendrils right off of a plant! We'll also "plant" carrots (provided courtesy of Whole Foods University Heights) that the children can "harvest."

Johnson and Wales University
Culinary experts and student chefs will help children prepare some of the fresh vegetables on hand that day, plus children will also get to create and taste some healthy snacks!

FINAL PROJECT - Choose one

Tatutina - Art Studio
Children will get to choose their own produce bag to decorate and take home to use on their next trip to the farmer’s market!

or

Rhode Island PBS - Video Diary
Children will be asked a few questions about what they learned during the event. Their answers will be captured on film and aired during children’s programming on Rhode Island PBS!

or

Nurturing Nutrition LLC - Healthy Menu
Under the guidance of pediatric dietitians from Nurturing Nutrition, LLC, children will create a fun and healthy menu, perfect to take home and help make their next meal in the kitchen (with supervision, of course)!
